Substrate Material Choice Reasoning How To Apply
New Asphalt
  1. Latex-Waterborne
  2. Alkyd/Chlorinated Rubber
  1. Unlike solvent-based paints, latex will not bleed or brown out with the asphalt tars.
  2. A minimum of 21 days under optimum curing conditions should be allowed before using solvent base paints on new asphalt.
  1. Apply two coats, each about ½ your dry film thickness. Second coat is applied next day (or better), 3-6 months later.
  2. Due to porosity of new asphalt, the first coat will "Soak-Up" in pores.
Aged Asphalt
  1. Latex
  2. Waterborne
  3. Chlorinated Rubber
  4. Alkyd
  1. Fair durability, low VOC.
  2. Better Durability, low VOC.
  3. Good durability and adhesion, high VOC.
  4. Great durability and adhesion, lower VOC.
  1. Can be used when drying time is not critical.
  2. Good drying time. Use early spring, late fall, or night striping.
